IAM Weekend 21 > Workshops

Designing Policies for Sustainable Futures

Hosted by Sofia Carvalho & Juliana Lubianca
Designers and Strategists at WithCompany

We’ve been exploring the ways in which the work we develop through our client projects can inform policies that are more in tune with population’s needs, environmental challenges and local economy contexts; asking ourselves:

How can we have a more active role in the makings of local and national policy?

We believe it all starts in learning more about the mechanisms of policy design. In this workshop, we invite participants to form a fictional city council and create a new roadmap of policies for a city that is facing challenges across multiple public sectors.

Using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as the basis for a collection of scenarios, we go through a series of exercises and frameworks, with the aim of seeing how policy design can be used as a tool to shape sustainable futures; fostering a better understanding of the connections between work ‘in the field’ and the instruments used by government.

Each task force is charged with the job of designing a roadmap of policies for a specific public sector of our city, in order to achieve the goals we have committed to at the beginning of the term. There’s a lot to be done, but we are an ambitious administration: we believe  can meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the year 2030.

Something global has happened that affects the cities in slightly different ways, the chapters need to find a ways to work together to find a resolution based on the existing budgets and contexts provided. The cities need to ‘vote’ on the distribution of the resources (across the departments) and then co-create policy packages to tackle them.
